Critical Care Physician

Dr. Doug Austgarden is a critical care physician with extensive experience in emergency and critical care medicine. He completed his medical degree at the University of British Columbia in 1995, followed by a fellowship in emergency medicine in 2000 and critical care in 2001 at McMaster University. Since joining the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in 2005, Dr. Austgarden has made significant contributions to both emergency and critical care medicine. He practiced emergency medicine until 2018 and has focused on critical care since 2005. Dr. Austgarden served as the Chief of the Department of Critical Care from 2010 to 2019 and has been the Physician Lead for the Critical Care Rapid Response team since 2008. Additionally, he has been the Physician Lead for Organ Donation since 2016.

Dr. Austgarden is drawn to the field of critical care for the opportunity to work alongside an exceptionally highly skilled interprofessional team, all focused on improving outcomes for critically ill patients. He is passionate about using the full range of medical science available to provide the best chance for recovery and optimal care. Dr. Austgarden is dedicated to guiding patients and families through some of the most catastrophic times in their lives. He values clear communication, empathy, and professionalism to ensure they receive the support needed during critical moments.
